Pilates for Back PainWhat is Pilates?  How can Pilates help with my back pain? Pilates consists of various exercises which target the core (chest, back, and buttocks) of your body.  Pilates can be beneficial for people with and without back pain or injuries.  It is a great workout, targeting major areas.  It’s a more natural approach to treatment for back pain, eliminating the need for surgery and intensive rehab in some cases.

For people with back pain, Pilates can provide and improve much needed support, flexibility and strength.  To note, one should always consult with their doctor or physical therapist before entering a Pilates program for treatment purposes.  Pilates works at treating the underlying issue causing back pain, such as weak muscles and overall core issues.  By strengthening your core through a Pilates regimen, many people report complete pain relief!

However, you must be cautious before entering a program.  Back pain can be caused by many different reasons.  Pilates might not help everyone, but it’s definitely worth asking about!  Aside from consulting with your treating physician or physical therapist, be sure to ask for recommendations on Pilates instructors.  Some are more skilled in injury prevention/treatment than others.  Also, depending on your need, one-on-one might be more beneficial for you, at least at the beginning.
